Lettie Agnes (Wortelboer) Schmidt joined her beloved husband Bill in Heaven on July 19th, 2014. Born December 29, 1922 in Muskegon, Michigan to William and Aleta Lucille (nee: Workman) Wortelboer.
She was educated in Muskegon and was a member of the Christian Science Church. Lettie served as a WAVE in WWII at Great Lakes Naval Station where she met and married William Schmidt, Sr. on July 11, 1944. After returning with Bill to his hometown of Racine, Lettie attended Racine-Kenosha Normal School in Union Grove to become a teacher, and then attended Dominican College Racine, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Lettie taught at Ives Grove, Hansche, Crestview, Olympia Brown, and Knapp schools, retiring from Racine Unified School District in 1981 after 25 years. Together with her husband Bill they owned and operated Bill’s Tastee Freeze Drive In located in Woodruff, WI during the 1960’s and 70’s. Together they also owned and operated Doverwood Farms Bed and Breakfast in Union Grove. Her favorite memories were of traveling around the world with her husband and spending time with her family.
Lettie was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, William, her parents and four siblings. She is survived by her son William (Cathy) Schmidt, Jr. of Racine,
Daughters Carol (Pat) Birkett of Wausau and Barbara (Christopher) Jerry of Racine, Grandchildren Scott Schmidt, Carrie (Dan) Rangulli, Mathew (Tamaki) White, Theresa (Robert, preceded in death) Bishop, Christopher (Christine) Jerry, Benjamin (Justine) Jerry, and Sara Jerry, 20 great grand children and two great great grand children. In keeping with Lettie’s wishes, private memorial services were held at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.
