Betty Jane Zabel, 89, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan- All Saints on Saturday, February 21, 2015. She was born in Milwaukee on April 12, 1925, the daughter of the late George and Hazel (nee: Richards) Peliska.
After graduating from high school, Betty served her country by joining the U.S. Navy. On May 14, 1949, in St. Veronica’s Catholic Church, Milwaukee, she was united in marriage to Howard Zabel who preceded her in death on October 23, 2004. She spent her entire working career in the banking industry. She enjoyed watching and listening to the birds, gardening, and baking. Her family was her first love.
Surviving are her children, Gail Zabel, of Franksville, David Zabel, of South Milwaukee, Edward (Cindy) Zabel, of Amberg, WI, and Nancy (Randy) Doolittle, of Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren, Jeremy (Monica) Zabel, Nicole (Kurt) Witt, Edward (Kari) Zabel Jr., Andrea (Patrick) Jordan, Jeanine (Ken) Soliva, Joshua (Alysson) Doolittle, Alana Doolittle, Cari Doolittle, and Erin Doolittle; ten great-grandchildren, brother, George Peliska, of Virginia, MN; sisters, Patricia Trudell, of Menomonee Falls, and Shirley Roelke, of Hartland, WI; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Peliska, and Geraldine Peliska, both of Hales Corners. Her nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive her. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Betty was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry and Charles Peliska, and sister Doreen Zastrow.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6400 Spring St., on Wednesday, February 25th, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Terry Huebner officiating. Visitation will be in the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Entombment, with full military honors, will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. The family has suggested memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family would like to thank Wheaton Franciscan Hospice for the loving care they provided Betty in her last days.
