Caledonia – Thomas Joseph Fleury, 84, passed away peacefully, lovingly surrounded by his family, at his home in Racine on Wednesday, October 21.
He was born in Racine on September 9, 1931, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Fleury. Tom joined the United States Marines at the age of 17, and was awarded the Purple Heart while proudly serving his country during the Korean War.
He was married 63 years to his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Joan Rose (née: Tarr). They enjoyed traveling and took many wonderful trips together.
Until his retirement, he was a skilled mechanical design engineer. Tom loved the lake, sailing, and woodworking – so it was only natural that he built his own wooden sailboat. Before long, his grandchildren had lovingly nicknamed him "Boats."
Tom also delighted in making homemade soups for his family, using fresh ingredients and simmering love into every batch.
Tom was the proud and loving father of Mike (Marti) Fleury, Patrick Fleury, Cathy (Rob) Gordon, Sharon (Joe) Keegan, Jim Fleury, Amy (Dave) Ace and Tommy (Kendra) Fleury. He was blessed with 15 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and many dear relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his beloved son, Patrick Wiley; dearest sister, Jacquelyn Bradley; and special granddaughter, Terri Springer.
Tom “Boats” Fleury will be remembered as the most wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend anyone could ever ask for. He will be dearly missed. The world has lost a very special person.
Family and friends are invited to meet at St. Joseph Catholic Church (1532 N. Wisconsin St.) on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 for a visitation from 10-11 a.m. The celebration of Tom’s life and memorial Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Steve Varghese, SAC officiating. Military honors will follow the Mass. A private interment will take place at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
