Racine – Edith Mary (nee: Bertola) Ricchio, 95, passed away peacefully at Lakeshore Manor on Friday, April 9, 2010. Edith was born on May 26, 1914 in Chapman, KS to the late Alexander and Philomena (nee: Paris) Bertolla. She moved to Racine in May of 1926. On October 20, 1934 in St. Lucy Catholic Church, Racine, Wisconsin, she was united in marriage with Tristram Anthony Ricchio, who preceded her in death on May 23, 1990. With a profound Catholic faith, over the years Edith had been an active member of St. Lucy, Holy Name, St. Richard and St. Joseph Parishes. Although her main vocation in life was being a devoted homemaker (which she completely excelled at), she had also been employed by Hamilton Beach, JC Penney and Aladdin Flowers. Among her interests, she enjoyed crocheting afghans, baking, cooking, reading, gardening, making hats and braided rugs, playing cards and had a special gift for writing poetry. Edith was also a dedicated volunteer for the second grade children at Fratt Elementary School. Above all, she loved and cherished being in the surroundings of her entire family. Surviving are her children, Robert (Kay) Ricchio, David (Sandy) Ricchio, Renee (David) Benjamin and Deborah (Robert) Wiesner; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Rose and Delores Ricchio; brother-in-law, Frank Ricchio; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention all by name. In addition to her parents and husband, Edith was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Guido (Sarah) Bertola; sisters, Lena (Charles) Maier, Albina (Chelilo) Coredig, and Alma (George) Heymann. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 10:00 am in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1535 Erie Street, with Rev. John D. Aiello officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-8 pm and in the church on Saturday from 9-10 am. A heartfelt note of thanks to the entire staff of Lakeshore Manor and to Dr. Thomas Goodrich for their compassionate care and support.
