
Gertrude C. Lemke, 93, passed away at Clement Manor Health Center, Greenfield, on Friday, June 25, 2010. She was born in Racine on June 27, 1916, the daughter of the late Max and Clara (nee: Schweitzer) Bernhardt.
Mrs. Lemke graduated from St. Mary’s Elementary School, and from St. Catherine’s High School, class of 1935. On May 24, 1941, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, she was united in marriage to Raymond H. Lemke, who preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1960. She was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church for over 60 years. She volunteered for many church fund-raising efforts, and was in the Altar Sodality. She was also active with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. Mrs. Lemke was employed by St. Mary’s Hospital as a medical stenographer and radiology transcriber until her retirement in 1984.
Surviving are her children, Raymond H. (Florence) Lemke of Milwaukee, Thomas E. (Cheri) Lemke, of Greendale, and Mary C. (Michael) Van Den Langenberg, of Beckley, WV; grandchildren, Todd (special friend, Meg Kinder) Van Den Langenberg, of East Troy, Chad (fiancée, Erin Bolyard) Van Den Langenberg, of Morgantown, WV, Paul Lemke, Hannah Lemke, and Michael Lemke, all of Greendale; brothers, Jerome (Jean) Bernhardt, of Oostburg, WI, and Charles Bernhardt, of Oakfield, WI; sister, Mary Ann Sorensen, of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. Mrs. Lemke is also survived by her nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Frederick Bernhardt, and sisters, Catherine Cetrano and Josephine Krencisz.
Her Mass of Christian Burial is tentatively scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 30th, St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 1401 Grove Ave., with Rev. Richard Molter officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery-Kinzie Ave. The family has suggested memorials to St. Catherine’s High School.
