Racine– Muriel Mae “Mert” Fleury, 75, was born into eternal life at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints Medical Center on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 after a short, but courageous battle with Leukemia.
Mert was born in Rhinelander on May 19, 1937 to the late Robert Watson Cook and Kathryn (nee: Richardson) Ross. On June 2, 1956 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church – Rhinelander, she was united in marriage with Raymond F. Fleury. They moved to Racine in 1959.
A graduate of Rhinelander High School, Mert accomplished her dream of being a full-time mother. However, when her children were attending St. Lucy School, she served as a cook for the school lunch program. She also enjoyed working part time at Fin and Filter pet store and cleaning homes.
Mert was a devoted member of St. Lucy Catholic Church for over 50 years who enjoyed volunteering, especially at the annual festival. As an avid bowler, she proudly served as secretary of the Sturtevant Women Bowling League at Plaza Bowling Center. Bowling on leagues twice a week and in numerous tournaments gave her the opportunity to meet new people to see her “bowling buddies”. She was a phenomenal baker who made amazing wedding cakes, had a green thumb for gardening, looked forward to spending time at the family cottage in Rhinelander, and was an extremely loving grandmother. Mert will be remembered for her infectious smile and her constant concern for others. May she rest in peace.
Surviving are her children, Robert (Denise) Fleury, Susan Crowell and David (Wendy) Fleury; adored grandchildren, Sarah Crowell, Billie Gilbert, Christian and Nash Fleury, all of Racine; sister, Jean Freund; brothers, Mike and Pat Cook; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Fleury; brothers-in-law, John (Carol) and Richard Fleury; special friend, Ed Gotz, all of Rhinelander; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name.
In addition to her parents, Mert was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond Fleury on December 25, 2007; brothers, Robert and Tom Cook; Ray’s parents, John and Edna (nee: Wyss) Fleury; brother-in-law, James Fleury; nephew, Adam Fleury; and niece, Amy Savage.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 10 am in St. Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Avenue, with Rev. Mark R. Jones officiating. Entombment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery Garden Crypts. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Friday from 4-7 pm and in the church on Saturday from 9-10 am.
A heartfelt note of thanks to the doctors and staffs of the Wheaton Franciscan Cancer and Rehabilitation units who cared for Mert, especially Tanya, Miranda, and Katie for their compassionate care and genuine concern. May God bless all of you!

Aunt Mert you will be missed by so many that loved you! You were an inspiration to me and all that knew you. I have many childhood memories of you and Uncle Ray but most of all I remember your warm gentle loving hugs. I will miss our little games of words with friends we had been playing these past few months. I looked forward to that every day! Rest In Peace Auntie-I love you! Give my mom, dad, uncle ray, grandpa Cook, Uncle Bob & so many others a big hug from me! You being reunited with them in heaven is what comforts me right now! God Bless You and all your family as I know they will have a very empty place in their hearts without you around them. Love, Patti Jo & Dan
