Racine – Harriet “Hattie” Tutak passed away on August 30, 2017 at the age of 98.
Hattie was born in Racine, WI on September 11, 1918 to Boleslaw and Mary (Obremski) Skowronski. She married Leo Tutak on October 8, 1938, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Racine where she was a member until the Church’s closing, then joining St. Lucy Catholic Church.
Hattie worked at Ambrosia Chocolate for 4 years and then after her children were born, she worked at Western Publishing for 32 years.
She enjoyed making pierogis for holidays, and paczki before Lent. She also enjoyed baking, especially her kringles, sugar cookies and her famous rye bread, which her family could never get enough of. She loved getting together for dinner and then a game of Mexican Train Dominos with her family; also Kewpee’s hamburgers and Wells Brothers pizza were favorites. Hattie also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Almost 17 years ago, her Granddaughter, Julie, told her of all the kids at a Kenosha School where she worked, who had no hats and mittens. For 16 years, her mission was to make hats and mittens for those kids and others who needed them. Through the years, she had made almost 1,000 sets for several Kenosha schools, along with HALO, Women’s Resource Center, and several other organizations.
Hattie is survived by her son, Leo E. (Debbie) Tutak of West Lafayette, IN, and her daughters, Nancy (Jim) Kucharski and MaryLou (Dave) Redmon, of Racine. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Scott (Susan), Christopher (Heidi), Rick (Sandi), Mike (Joyce), Debbie (Dave) , Julie (Angel) and Jeff (fiance Dana), and 6 great-grandchildren, Katie, Jeremy, Morgan, Amanda, Anthony and Olive, two brothers-in-law, John Strach and Mel Arnson, both of Muskegon, MI and many nieces and nephews, and also 3 special friends, Vi, Jeanette, and Viola, and numerous other friends.
