Racine – Joe V. Gomez, age 92, passed away peacefully at Ascension-All Saints Hospital on Saturday, October 14, 2017.
Joe was born in South San Antonio, Texas on February 18, 1925 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Eligio Gomez. He was a graduate of South San Antonio High School. On November 29, 1952 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, he was united in marriage with the love of his life, Betty J. (nee: Schommer).
Joe was employed as a mechanic / Spanish interpreter at JI Case Corp. for over 36 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and of the Case 20 Year Club. Among his interests, Joe enjoyed woodworking, remodeling / building homes, dancing with Betty, playing baseball on the JI Case team, and music – especially playing the tenor saxophone. Above all, Joe was true family man who loved spending time with all of his loved ones.
Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Betty J. Gomez; their children, Rosemary (Richard) Goebel, Elizabeth “Liz” (Daniel) Pietsch and Joseph Gomez; grandchildren, Greg (Malissa) Goebel, Erik (Kate) Goebel, Michael (Jennifer) Pietsch, Kristina (Juan) Hernandez, Rebecca Gomez and Rachel Gomez; great-grandchildren, Abigail & Mason Pietsch; Ameena, Lilly & Elliot Goebel; and Addeline Gomez; sisters, Elaine Kercher and Isabelle Prince; brother-in-law, Robert Schommer; sister-in-law, Patsy (Clifford) Anderson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Mary Ziino; sisters and brothers, Inez (John) Dangler, Lily (John) Rangel, Annie (Robert) Matzke, Catalina (Lindsey) Broughton, Albert (Catalina) Gomez and Anthony (Arminia) Gomez; sister-in-law, Judith Schommer; and brothers-in-law, Donald Kercher, James Prince and Norman Schommer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 10:30 am at Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6400 Spring Street, with Rev. Yamid Blanco officiating. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be in the church on Thursday from 9:00 – 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested.
A special note of thanks to everyone at Ascension-All Saints and Villa at Lincoln Park for the compassionate care and support given in Joe’s time of need. May God bless all of you!
