Known to most as Jay, and “JT” to his family, Dr. McCully was born June 15, 1930, to Theo and Lois (Green) McCully in Des Moines, Iowa. Known for his kind manner, gentle spirit, and humble nature, he was raised in Iowa and Milwaukee, Wisconsin with his older sister Peg and brother Ed. Jay gave his life to Christ at a young age and followed his Lord and Savior his entire life.

He married his college sweetheart, Janet Rust, on August 24, 1951, and they were married for 44 years until her death in early 1996.

He graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois in 1952, then attended the Medical College of Wisconsin eventually specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Following medical school, he enlisted in the US Army where he became known as Dr. John. The Army took Jay and his family to Colorado, Hawaii, Oklahoma and finally the Pacific Northwest. In 1967 he resigned his commission and entered private practice with two friends, forming the South Seattle Women’s Clinic. He retired in 1989 and cared for Janet until her death from cancer.

On October 15, 2000, he married Betty Danenhour Lockhart and they were married for over 21 years until his death. Jay loved spending time with family and playing games. He was active in his local church as an elder where he preached frequently and performed many wedding ceremonies. Jay left notes for his memorial service and his simple, urgent request was there should be a short meditation pointing people to the Lord Jesus, his only hope for heaven.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and first wife Janet. He is survived by his second wife, Betty, his son Tom McCully (Terri), and daughters Carole Johnson (Bryan) and Mary Harney (Pat). He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Evan McCully (Krista), Scout Kelly (David), Alyssa Pirtle (Nick), Spencer Johnson (Krista), Collin Harney (Casey), Cooper Johnson (Renee), Parker Johnson (Taryn), Kate McCully, Anna McCully as well as great-grandchildren Chord Johnson, Harper Kelly and her little sister to be born in June 2022. In addition, Jay is survived by Betty’s 21 grandchildren, many of whom knew him as grandpa.
