Mt. Pleasant – Bert T. Johnson, 87, passed at home surrounded by the love of his family on Monday, September 17, 2012. He was born in Eleva, Wisconsin on April 15, 1925, son of the late John and Gena (nee: Hanson) Johnson. On August 8, 1950 he was married in Mondovi to Fern I. Schultz.
As a young man he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and then joined the US Army, serving overseas from 1943-1946. Upon returning from the war he joined with his family in the scrap metal business. After moving to the Racine area he began his own business, Bert Johnson, Inc. along with his wife Fern, providing the installation of underground utilities for major construction projects in the area. Bert had a strong work ethic and his work never ceased until his retirement in 1995. He enjoyed being outdoors, traveling, and visiting casinos. Bert was a hard worker all of his life, but always took time to be with his family. He enjoyed mentoring his children and grandchildren. He was a very compassionate man with a sense of humor and a heart of gold that he passed on to many others.
