Doris J. Nelson

Aug 22, 1927 – Sep 21, 2011

Doris J. Nelson, 84, passed away in Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.

Doris was born in Moorhead, Iowa on August 22, 1927, the daughter of George and Christina (nee: Mortensen) Johnson.  While attending Dana College in Blair, NE, she met her husband, Earl I. Nelson.  They were married in Iowa on August 24, 1947.

Prior to her marriage, Doris worked for the Federal Employment Services in Omaha, NE. The Nelson’s then moved to Milwaukee where Doris worked for Cleaver-Brooks.

Doris has lived in Racine since 1949.   She was the secretary at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection for 24 years and was also an active member of the congregation.   She was a member of the Women of Resurrection.   For many years, Doris played golf with the Ives Grove Senior Women’s golf group.  She was also an active member of PEO, Chapter A-Z. Doris loved to cook; she knit mittens and prayer shawls, and was an avid reader.  She was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Earl I Nelson, daughter Karen Belz (James) of Florida, grandson Michael Belz of Maryland, and grandson Steven Belz (Kelly) of Texas.  She is also survived by great grandsons, Mitchell and Simon Belz of Texas.  Doris was the youngest of nine children.  She is further survived by her sister Ethel of Storm Lake, IA, and Velma of Elk City, OK, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doriswas preceded in death by daughter Cynthia L Nelson.

A memorial service for Doris will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 322 Ohio Street, on Monday, September 26, at 11 a.m. with Pastor James Barsch and Dr. Melvin Miritz, officiating. Relatives and friends can meet with family, in the church, on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Habitat, Bible Translators (Box 2050, Aurora, IL, 60507) or the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection.
