Edward Segil, 96, passed from this life as he lived it, quietly and unassuming, on Friday, June 10, 2011. He was born in Poland on March 5, 1915, the son of the late Eliezar and Fanny (nee: Siker) Segil.
The family immigrated to the United States when he was three years old. He grew up in Kenosha. On May 27, 1945, in Beth Hillel Temple, Kenosha, he was united in marriage to the former Myrna Kalb, who preceded him in death on July 29, 1996. Mr. Segil was a veteran of three campaigns in WWII. He was an infantry sergeant in the U.S. Army and was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in the Mediterranean Theater during the invasion of Sicily. He sacrificed himself for our country with the loss of a leg in the Normandy Invasion, and was awarded the Purple Heart.. Mr. Segil had been employed at LeBlanc until his retirement in 1973 when he moved to Las Vegas. There he enjoyed a second career, dealing his favorite pastime, poker, and tending his roses. He returned to Wisconsin in 2007 to be near his twin daughters.
Surviving are his twin daughters, Cheryl (Douglas) Jeffery, of Franklin, WI and Ellen Heim, of Libertyville, IL; grandchildren, Michael (Christine) Jeffery, of Gurnee, IL, and Allison Heim, of New York City; great grandson, Cooper Todd Jeffery; and brother, Harry Siegal, of Las Vegas, NV. Mr. Segil is further survived by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his dear friend and companion, Sylvia Brevick.
His funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday, June 20th, at 2:00 p.m. with Rabbi Michael Remson officiating. Relatives and friends can meet with the family on Monday, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in B’nai Zedek Cemetery, Kenosha. The family has suggested memorials to the Beth Hillel Temple.
Mr. Segil would not be noticed in a crowd, but he will be remembered by many. He is now at peace.
