Mr. Eugene R. Szymczak, 91, died at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove on January, 12, 2007, just one day before his 92nd birthday. He was born in Racine on January 13, 1915 to the late Joseph and Sophia (nee: Lizek) Szymczak. On August 10, 1942 he married the former Helen L. Puchinsky in South Carolina. She preceded him in death on March 2, 2001. Eugene worked for the US Postal service from 1939-1975. However from 1942-46, he was called to serve his nation with the US Army during WWII. He served in Italy, receiving both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Eugene was honorably discharged as a captain. Eugene and Helen were longtime members of St. Stanislaus and recently, St. Lucy Catholic Church. He also belonged to the V.F.W. Eugene was an avid tennis player in his younger years. He also enjoyed photography, ham radio and traveling with his wife to many places around the world including, various European countries, Mexico and Alaska. His survivors include his sons, Dr. James (Nancy) Szymczak of Brookfield, WI, Eugene J. Szymczak of Kenosha, Thomas (Joan) Szymczak of Franksville; grandchildren, James (Shelly) Szymczak, Andrew (April) Szymczak, Curtis, Ethan and Evelyn Szymczak; great grandchildren, Haley, Tyler and Abby Szymczak; brother, Chester Szymczak of Racine; sister-in-law, Stephanie Mancuso of Racine and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Eugene was also preceded in death by his sister, Genevieve (William) Rogan, sisters-in-law, Caroline Szymczak, Sophie (Edmund) Willing and brother-in-law, Gus Mancuso. Family and friends are invited to meet at St. Lucy Catholic Church (3101 Drexel Ave) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. for the celebration of Eugene’s life and funeral mass with Rev. Mark R. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery on Hwy 32. There will be a visitation in the church on Wednesday from 10:30 –11:30 a.m. Memorials have been suggested to St. Lucy Catholic Church.
