Because of the “Stay At Home” policy presently, this is how I’d like you (if you wish), to participate in a memorial celebration for Gary: On May 11th at 6:30 in the evening, take your prayer card and recite the prayer remembering Gary in a special way. Doing this, we’re safe, but “Alone Together”. Love and God bless – Mary

Gary Kent Bartels was born July 16th, 1937 to Gladys and Gerhard Bartels. He had an older sister named June. He grew up in Milwaukee WI playing with his friends in the alley. As he got older they would walk to the park to play and sometimes ride the city bus.His dad would take him to see cowboy movies at the nearby theater. He went through school and graduated from Bay View High School in 1955. From there he entered the army and served for three years. When he got out he worked at American Motors. Because the Milwaukee plant closed, he transferred to the Kenosha plant which ultimately became Chrysler. He met Mary Salm through friends and they married in August of 1969. In 1976 he became the father of Becky Ann Bartels who died of cancer at age 29. He will always be remembered as a fabulous husband, a proud father, a sincere friend, and for his quick wit which brought smiles and laughter to many people. He is survived by his nephew and wife, Alan and Pam Schlinder, his niece Diane Valley, and their children and grand children, as well as some cousins, and Mary’s surviving family members. He was definitely met by many family members in Heaven. Contributions could go to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Mary, I’m so sorry for your loss. You and Gary were such a fun couple to serve at Denny’s. I enjoyed teasing him to pick up his toys from the road when Hwy 29/Hwy 32 were under construction. I think that he enjoyed it too. May God bless you during this time of sorrow. Stay healthy and safe.
Judy Campbell says
Mary, what a sad time for you. I remember all the good times we had in our younger days at that wonderful apartment on Wisconis Avenue in Milwaukee. Gary getting towed because we failed to read signs. Such innocence. Now it seems funny, paying the fine not so much. Your partner in crime.
May you be comforted in your memories.

What a sad time. Gary and I grew up a block apart, and he was a great friend. I took the 50th class reunion book to him and sat across the table from Gary and Mary at a class reunion. My Wife Sandy and I will remember Gary with only good memories. He will be a great Angel. We are at 6020 S. Buckhorn Av. #310, Cudahy, WI. 53110 if we can help with anything.

I worked with Gary in the body shop in Milwaukee for Americn Motors Corporation and then in Kenosha for AMC/Renult/Chrysler and Daimler/Chrysler. Gary was always a classy person with a fabulous wit and a good union member. He had a way of taking a problem or situation and making some sense about it. I am deeply sorry for your loss and may he rest in peace.

So sorry for your loss Aunt Mary. He was such a sweet man. I have a lot of very fond memories of both of you throughout my childhood. One f my favorite memories is when we went to the Milwaukee Zoo. We took two cars and Uncle Gary & my Dad would take turns passing each other on the expressway while us kids egged them on because we all thought we were racing !
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Gary was a kind and gentle man who would always help in any way he could. His life revolved around Mary and Becky and was very dedicated to both. He was so proud of Becky and would talk about her accomplishments with such pride. With the dedication of Mary at his side, Gary had a good life and will be missed.
