On behalf of my husband Wendel, my son Dr Wendel, my daughter Tricia and myself, my expressions of sympathies go out to my cousins Gwendolyn, Arlene, Anderson and Derek on the demise of my aunt Candace. She introduced me to the streets of NY and helped me stretch the little money I had on my first trip to the USA in 1981. May you find comfort in quiet reflections.🤗🙏🏽

On behalf of me and my family, I send our heartfelt sympathies on the passing of Mom. Mom was a wonderful, caring, and loving soul, always ready to step in as the need arose. She played her role and played it well. As the curtain drops and she gracefully exits, let us give her a bow and say farewell Mom. When we think of her, let us send her good wishes. May she rest in peace and on the bright, cloudless day, rise in glory. She will be missed.

Tribute to Hilda Candace Small
First, we wish to extend our deepest condolences to Gwen, Andy, Arlene and Derek, and their families; as well as to all extended family members and loved ones.
We met Hilda Candace Small when we began attending St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Brooklyn. She always greeted everyone with a cheerful smile and showed genuine interest in their wellbeing.
She loved to sing and pray, especially during our Friday evenings Bible Study Group- “Share n’ Care”. She also loved to cook and share delicious meals. Her hospitality included providing refreshment after the 8:00 AM service on Sundays. Her cakes and sandwiches were always a delightful treat.
To the St. Gabriel’s family, she was Mother Small/Mom Small/Mom. She and her (late) husband, Ormond Jarvis Small, were in many ways, pillars of support for St. Gabriel’s Church.
Around 1993 Mom was elected the inaugural President of St. Gabriel’s Senior Citizens Group, which became popular for its programming and annual concerts. The performing group of ladies were nicknamed “The Golden Girls” and the Parish Hall where they performed became known as the “Golden Hall.”
Mom Small was independent minded and forward thinking as she diligently applied herself to building the Senior Center.
Mom’s generosity and community mindedness were not only evident at church. Her home offered warmth and care, to guests and persons who knocked at the door in need of solace, prayer, or other help.
Mom was a person of love and was very family oriented. She had many remarkable attributes in addition to her warm embrace, cheerful smile, dependability, and generosity.
We will surely miss Mom. May her soul Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory.

Hilda Small, “Mother Small” as she was fondly called, was one of the wonderful persons I met at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, Brooklyn, New York more than forty years ago. Relatively small in stature, she was one of the esteemed persons that was regular at worship and hard working in ministry. Among her special qualities she was charitable, humble, hospitable and pleasant in disposition. Such qualities were both an inspiration and an example to members of our Christian community. We are thankful to God for her devotion and dedicated service to the St Gabriel’s Episcopal Church community.
Our condolences to the children, grandchildren and families of Hilda Small. Mother Small, your work among us did not go unnoticed and we are proud to honor you with the title “Well Done, Thou Good and Faithful Servant.” May Your Soul Rest in Peace!
