We are so sorry to learn of John’s passing. He and John (Lawler) were class mates at St. Mark’s grade school and St. Joseph’s High School both graduating in 1965. We were fortunate to visit with John in April 2022 for John’s (Lawler) 75th birthday celebration. He was always so kind and giving and he will be missed by many.

I am so sorry to hear of John’s death. He was an excellent debate partner and friend in High school, and throughout his life he consistently thought of other people before he thought of himself. His kindness and that characteristic twinkle in his eye mentioned above will be long remembered.

I shared many classes and extra curricular activities with John at St. Joe’s high school. We didn’t have much contact after that, but John always showed up to pay his respects at funerals – my parents, my wife’s (Diane Hammond) parents and grandmother, as well as mutual friends. Rest in peace, John.

Please let me extend my sincerest sympathy to John’s family—Geninne, sons, grandchildren, and great grandchild. Each of you are John’s most precious important, treasures. His love of you will never die. And you will find his life will be a gift that keeps on giving to you..
I met John at the University of Wisconsin in the mid 1960s in Italian language class. It was a period of America’s history during which the Vietnam War was raging and our fellow classmates were being inducted into military service . One could not live during that emotional, tumultuous period in our nation—,following the assassination of President John Kennedy, the dawn of the modern Civil Rights Movement, the Moon Landing and so many other unforgettable moments—and not be permanently impacted.
I made friends with many of John’s friends from high school in Kenosha. They were a happy bunch. Being from out of state, I always appreciated their many kindnesses and the wonderful laughter we shared, John was always a hard worker and held a particular interest in world events and politics. Our paths did not cross for many years until the construction of our nation’s World War II Memorial which was dedicated in our nation’s capital in 2004. At that time, I received a note in my Washington office from John inquiring if I was the same person that attended the University of Wisconsin. Indeed I was. He wanted to let me know how much the Memorial meant to him in memory of his father and all Americans who bequeathed Liberty to us. His note meant a lot to me as I had drafted the original legislation and worked hard for nearly 17 years to achieve its construction. About a year ago, I got another note from John informing me he had taken members of his family to Gettysburg. I was touched by that information as well because it told me he was doing what a caring grandpa would do— attempt to pass on to the next generation some of the most. Important lessons of America. So many times, Geninne at John’s urging would kindly send me a memento from Kenosha.
Such generous hearts! At one particularly difficult time in our family and in Congress, I received an email that opened to play the University of Wisconsin “Fight Song!” Let me tell you, it worked! I carried forward with new strength.. John was a true friend.
May I wish you comfort in these difficult days of loss and bereavement. If I can ever be of assistance, please know I would be honored to assist in John’s memory — a caring, patriotic man, proud father, faithful companion, uncle, and grandpa, a man with a very generous, kind heart, sparkling smile, easy laugh, and keen intellect, Thank you, dearest John.
