Kenosha – Joseph Eugene Potts, age 72, passed away at home, surrounded with the love of his family, late Saturday, December 26, 2020 after being diagnosed with cancer just two months ago.
Joe was born in Detroit, MI on October 21, 1948 to the late Herman and Evelyn (nee: Burns) Potts. He graduated from Tremper High School in 1967. Joe met the love of his life, Anita M. Cipolla the summer of 1966. They were married in Chicago, IL on October 24, 1970 and celebrated their 50th Anniversary this year.
Joe proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany during the Vietnam War. Although quiet about his military years, Joe was a member of the Navy Ship Club 40, and the American Legion Union Grove Post. He had the magnificent opportunity to experience the Stars & Stripes Honor Flight – November 2019.
He was a proud Teamster and drove trucks for 34 years. He began his career hauling cars for KAT (Kenosha Auto Transport) and finished his career delivering groceries for SUPERVALU, retiring in 2005. Those who knew Joe, know that he loved cars and racing. He loved talking about the cars he owned over the years, including a 1935 Ford Coupe, 1957 Chevy Bel Air Wagon, and Chevy Monte Carlo. He spent many years doing demolition derbies, dirt track racing, and recently enjoying the NASCAR Racing Experiences at many of the nearby tracks.
Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Anita; their children Donita (Jeremie Flippo) Marcello, and Wade (Jennifer) Potts; adored “Umpie” to grandchildren, Jordan & Tony Marcello, and Lila & Logan Potts; sister, Tami Potts; sister-in-law, Kathleen (Isaac) Barreto; brothers-in-law, Joseph (Dagmar) Cipolla & Charles (Mary Kay) Cipolla; nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brothers, Brian Potts & Mitchell “Bobo” Potts; and by Anita’s parents, Sam & Mary (nee: Cali) Cipolla.
Private family services were held in the funeral home on Wednesday, December 30th, 2020. Entombment, with military honors, followed at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park.
Special note of thanks to Cancer Treatment Center of America and to Hospice Alliance for the compassionate care & support given in Joe’s time of need. May God bless all of you!
