Somers – Burton A. Scott, 72, of Somers, died Monday, April 2, 2007 at his home. He was born Feb. 16, 1935 in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, to Robert and Helen (Lampson) Scott. He enlisted in the military in 1953 and served with the Army Security Agency in Germany from 1954 until his discharge in 1956. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1960, he earned a law degree from the university in 1963. He married Evelyn Magnuson on Dec. 31, 1957. Burt devoted 27 years to public service–as a government lawyer, prosecutor, and judge. In 1964, he became Kenosha County’s first corporation counsel, followed by five years as Kenosha city attorney. Elected district attorney in 1970, he was appointed county judge two years later and won a full six-year term in 1973. In 1980, Judge Scott was elected judge of the 12-county 2nd District Wisconsin Court of Appeals, based in Waukesha. For six years he served as chief judge of the entire statewide Court of Appeals. In 1991, he left the bench to become associate dean of the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada. The Scotts returned to the Kenosha area in 2001. Judge Scott’s lifelong interest in education led him to play an important role in the 1960s community campaign to bring a four-year University of Wisconsin branch to the Kenosha area. He and his wife were also active in the 1978 referendum that produced a new Bradford High School. In Baldwin County, Alabama, where the Scotts spent several winters, he worked with Habitat for Humanity to build eight homes for less fortunate families. Lake Michigan offered Judge Scott the opportunity to pursue his avid interests in boating and sportfishing. He and his family also enjoyed camping and travel. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; a daughter Kifflie (Steve Sullivan), of Kansasville; a son, David (Tiffany), of Kenosha; two granddaughters, Julie Sullivan, of Kansasville, and Nikki Brnak, of Kenosha; two grandsons, Kendall Sullivan, of Kansasville, and Ryan Brnak, of Kenosha; two sisters, Lois Scott of DeLand, Florida, and Mary Helen (Clarence) Bingham of Stayton, Oregon; one brother, Robert (Ann), of Delavan; many loving nieces and nephews, and Syd, his devoted collie. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, 4600 County Line Rd., from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, followed by a service of tributes and remembrances. Special thanks to Dr. Michael Mullane, Kelly Konesko, P.A., and the incredible staff of the Oncology Alliance. Aunt Ev, my heart is with you in this difficult moment…
Tracy called me at work with the sad news and I had to run to the bathroom to hide my tears. My memory flashed back to August 1994 in Reno where I first met uncle Burt and Aunt Ev. Hot August Nights, Virginia City, Lake Tahoe, Sardine Lake, Pyramid Lake, Donner Pass, Squaw Valley, Carson City; he made it all so much more enjoyable with his comments and explanations. So full of energy, so eager to share his vast knowledge with us. That۪s how I will remember him.
Uncle Burt, it was an honor to have met you.
