A Woman More Valuable Than Diamonds
(Proverbs 31:10)
Katherine Elizabeth Norman Price was a woman of strong faith, grace and immeasurable love. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age and joined St. John Baptist Church in Ripley, Mississippi. Born on November 21, 1928, to the union of Mattie Ann Norman and James Norman, Katherine answered God’s call to eternal life on May 30, 2024.
Katherine met the love of her life and dreams in Hugh M. Price while still living in Ripley. Hugh always told the story that he saw a beautiful young lady standing on the store’s porch drinking a “Double Cola.” He took one look and said, “I’m going to marry her one day!” He asked Katherine out and after several dates he told her he would give her a world of happiness. Hugh promised to keep her safe and provide a life of all her heart’s desires. Not long after meeting and dating Katherine, Hugh moved to Racine, Wisconsin for a better job and way of life. He didn’t forget the promises made to Katherine. Being a man of his word, Hugh returned to Ripley and brought his new bride to join him in Racine. Together, they created the foundation for a family anchored in faith and love. To this loving union of forty-eight years, three children were born: Hugh Fernard (Jacquelyn) Price, Regina (Daryl) Hall, and Angela Gray.
Katherine was a multi-faceted woman who possessed many talents. She ran track and played basketball for her high school. Katherine also taught elementary grades. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She shared her love of gospel and jazz music with her children. Katherine was known for her delicious cooking and baking skills. Katherine utilized her cosmetology training while maintaining a home and caring for her family. She later entered the workforce earning awards such as the Honorary Life Membership to the Graphic Communications International Union, while employed by Western Printing. Katherine was active in her church home, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, and several civic organizations. One of Katherine’s strongest gifts was her special sense of humor. She often reminisced about growing up with her siblings in the south with a special touch of humor to smooth over the challenging times of their era.
Katherine held high standards for herself and required her children to strive for excellence in their endeavors. She modeled strong work ethics that gave her children the confidence to believe they could achieve success regardless of society’s challenges. Katherine continued to share her strength, wisdom and love with her beloved grandchildren: Hugh ll (Deanna) Price, Carmen (DeMarco) Pledger, Damon (Natasha) Price-Hall, Brandon Hall, Britt (Anthony) Schoen; great grandchildren: Chase, Jillian, Logan, Mason, Rich, Harmony, and great-great granddaughter, Kaia.
Katherine is predeceased by her loving husband, Hugh M. Price, her parents: James and Mattie Norman; siblings: Hannah M. Swanson, John C. Norman, James M. Norman, and grandson: Justin T. Price.
She also leaves to cherish her memory, sisters-in-law, Mary Norman and Geraldine Price, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lisa Burczyk says
When Great Trees Fall
When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance, fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance of
dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.
