Miller's FlowersLemont Javell Allen, age 78, received his Heavenly reward on Friday, December 9, 2022 at his residence. He was born on February 24, 1944 in Racine, Wisconsin to the late Pastor Nesbie J. and Vicie L. (nee Barker) Allen. He was raised in a holiness home taught to reverence and acknowledge God in all situations, Lemont was a member of The Twelfth Street Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.), later named Grace Temple C.O.G.I.C. He had a love for gospel music and was a was appointed Choir Director of the Southeast Jurisdictional Choir. Lemont and the late Frank Johnson combined the Southeast and Northwest Jurisdictional choirs to create a mass choir for a national convention scheduled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The youth enjoyed singing together and the Jurisdictional leaders the late Bishops Dennis L. Flakes and P. J. Henderson allowed the name to be changed to the Wisconsin Community Choir. The choir traveled and sang for many years with Bishop John A. Barton as the chaplain and the late Horace O’Kelly as the business manager. On August 31, 2008 the Wisconsin Community Choir gathered for a 25-year reunion which was their final performance. He later joined the United C.O.G.I.C. and was an usher and on the finance team until his health declined.
He was a 1962 graduate of Washington Park High School and while attending played tuba in the school band. He was employed at S. C. Johnson (SCJ) for 43 years retiring in 2011 and was a member of the JMBA and 40-year club. While at SCJ he and co-workers formed a group named “Friends of the Community” and collected donations and provided Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets throughout the community. He coached many softball and basketball teams throughout his tenure along with the Kiwanis of Racine, and refereed the Racine Raiders. He was also a participant of the Big Brother/Big Sister Racine Organization.
He was formerly married to the late Cleopra Allen, and to this union two children were born Sheldon and Vala Allen. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, watching sports and westerns.
Along with his parents he was predeceased by four brothers, Marshall, Lonnis, Algers and Rheiston Allen; a nephew Jimi Allen, a niece Jahamarah Allen; two brothers-in-law Craig Oliver Sr, and Luzell Johnson.
Memories of Lemont will be cherished by his children, Sheldon Allen and Vala (Donnell) Claybrook; grandchildren, Julian McKenzie and Blake Alexandria Sims; great-granddaughter, Azrielle Rose Debruin; siblings, Sharyan Allen-Johnson, Vernest (Alinda) Allen, Gladys Oliver, and Oren (Marsha) Allen. He will also be remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends (you know who you are).
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
