Petals by FeliciaKenosha, WI. – Lucius Charles Powell was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 12, 1952 to Irene Powell and Lucius C Smith Sr.
Lucius was formally educated in the Chicago Public School system in Chicago, Illinois where he graduated from Farragut High School. After high school Lucius joined the United States Air Force and later went on to attend Gateway Technical College where he received an electrician degree. Lucius would later relocate to Kenosha, Wisconsin where he would work and retire from American Motors Corporation as an assemblyman.
Lucius, often referred to as Lu, truly loved his family. He really enjoyed spending time with them at his sister Daisey Vaughn’s’ house for all of the different birthday parties, cookouts, weddings, or any holiday celebration. It didn’t matter what the occasion was, he would always find the opportunity to sing and dance. And boy could he sing. His love for music began at an early age and continued throughout his life. Growing up in Chicago during the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s and listening to legendary groups like The Chi-Lites, The Temptations, and The Whispers to name a few would have a great influence on him. It would further fuel that burning desire and passion he had to sing great music which caused him to not only join but become the lead singer of a male singing group in Chicago named “The Enchanted 5”. When he moved to Kenosha he never lost his passion and desire to sing. Lucius along with his brother -in-law Walter Vaughn, and friends Daniel Thomas and Norman Foster would form a male singing group named “Sincerely Yours”. They would become a local sensation singing at the various Clubs/lounges and other venues as part of the featured musical entertainment. They continued singing together for many years making great harmonies and bringing joy to their audiences and fans everywhere they went. In addition to his love of singing Lucius loved to dress up. It was his charisma, style and fashion that inspired others like his younger brothers, nephews, and close friends to dress to impress. He would say that you have to look your best at all times because you are always on display. Everyone that knew Lu knew that he was a martial art enthusiast. He took time to to introduce his nephews to the various martial arts techniques. He wanted them to learn the art of being disciplined young men. Although he was not perfect he tried to be the best man that he could be for them. He was a super star inside and out.
Lucius had a genuine love and concern for his family and friends. He would always check up on everybody by either a phone call or he would just simply pop up over to your house on a visit. He didn’t stay long but long enough to let you know that he was thinking about you. That’s just how Lucius was; he was always concerned about everybody and willing to lend a helping hand to those who were in need. He has made a lasting impression on everyone that he has ever come in contact with. His great smile, big heart and that smooth silhouette singing voice will be deeply missed by all.
Lucius Charles Powell was preceded in death by His Mother Irene Powell, His Father Lucius C Smith Sr, one sister Marie West, two brothers: Calvin Powell Sr., LD Powell, and two brother -in-laws: Henry Gross Jr, and Walter Vaughn Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories his siblings (oldest to youngest): Irene Powell- Gross, Gloristene Carr, Daisy Vaughn, Argustus (Alicia) Smith, Lucille Powell, Gregory (Lucy) Powell Sr., Josette Powell, as well as Janice Tucker and Phyllis Ann (Eddie) Smith whom he loved as sisters, Best friend Daniel Thomas, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. May his spirit forever live on in our minds and in our hearts.
