Sturtevant- Marie Elizabeth Zickus, 88, went to her Lord escorted by the Heavenly Angels on Sunday, December 31, 2006 from the home of her son, Bye Zickus, with her loving family at her side. Marie has lived with Bye, and family, for the past 12 years. It was during this time that countless loving memories were created and will be so wonderfully cherished for years to come. Marie’s first born granddaughter, Carrie Conner, had cared for her Grandma for a few years as Marie’s health progressively failed, a task she never complained about. During the past few months, the entire family banned together to tenderly care for Grandma. Marie had been a patient of Hospice Alliance since October 2006, where Sally and Ada, (two special angels) provided compassionate end-of-life care, and our family loves them very much for this. Pastor John, Dean and Bethany, also from Hospice; Dr. Robert Gullberg (a truly loving man); and Fr. Mark Jones were also great support to Marie and to our family. Marie was born on July 2, 1918 in Waupaca, the first born of Myron and Sarah (nee: Wilson) Harrington. She moved to Racine as a teenager and, shortly after, met Louis A. Zickus who became her husband of over 50 years. Marie was a member of St. Lucy Catholic Church. Among her interests, she enjoyed sewing and gardening. Above all, she loved life and was happiest when in the surroundings of her entire family. We love you Grandma and we will meet again! Surviving are her three children whom she loved dearly, Bye T. (Rose Ann) Zickus of Sturtevant; Scott J. (Kathy) Zickus of Colorado; and Debbie Zickus Gemignani of Racine; grandchildren, Chad (Jana) Zickus, Carrie (Shane) Conner, Sarah Zickus; Roger, Jacob and Samantha Gemignani; Kylie Vanderhoef; Kyle and Aaron Zickus; great-grandchildren, Hope and Hannah Conner, Dylan and Natalie Zickus; and Jordan Woiteshek; sister, Helen Johnson; sisters-in-law, Violet Harrington and Mary Ellen Zickus; brother-in-law, James (Elaine) Zickus; special friend, Rose Anzalone; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Zickus; father, Myron Harrington; mother, Sarah Redmond; step-father, George Redmond; granddaughter, Gina Marie Friedrich; brother, Myron Harrington; sister-in-law, Helen (Wilfred) Patrick; brothers-in-law, Peter Zickus and David Johnson; and in-laws, Hedwig and Peter Zickus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 5, 2007 at 11:00 am in St. Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Ave., with Rev. Mark R. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 pm and in the church on Friday from 10-11 am. In memory of Marie, memorials to St. Lucy Church or Hospice Alliance have been suggested. Marie’s son, Bye, said it best- “You can take away the person, but you can never take away the person’s spirit or memories that live on in our hearts!”
