
Mary C. Powell, 83, was called Home by her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 3, 2008. She was born in Springfield, IL on November 17, 1924 the daughter of the late Thomas and Della (nee: Jackson) Banks. Mrs. Powell had been employed by St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. On March 31, 1979, here in Racine she was united in marriage to Joseph Powell. She was then employed as a nurse for the City of Racine and later by All Saints- St. Mary’s Hospital. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Wayman A.M.E. Church and served on the Steward Board for many years. Mrs. Powell was also a member of the Community Women’s Group. Her greatest loves were her family, her God, her church and her cooking. Surviving are her beloved husband “Papa” Joe, their children; Theresa (Scott) Adair of Indianapolis, IN, Demetrius Powell of Milwaukee, and Juanita Copeland of Charlotte, SC; 5 loving grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Foy, Jessica Ann Hood, Jason Monroe Hood, their father William Hood Jr., Stacey Sayles and Charlisa Powell; her adoring great grandchildren, Christian, Alexa and Caleb Foy; 2 sisters Anna Watson of Kenosha and Edith Haley of Springfield, IL; sisters-in-law Annabelle Banks and Dorothy Banks both of Springfield, IL and Evelyn Powell of Racine. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by 7 siblings. Her Homegoing Service will be held in Wayman A.M.E. Church, 424 N. Memorial Dr., on Friday, March 7th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Charlene B. Mills officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and in the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Service. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park.

I am so sorry that I was unable to be at your funeral, because I was at a funeral in Mississippi. My husband’s grandmother passed on the same day that you did.
