
Kenosha – Muhbash-Shir Muhammad, 68, a server of the Muslim Center of Racine, was called home to Allah on Tuesday, December 27, 2011.
He was born in Marion, IL on June 21, 1943 to Benjamin Samuel Griffin and Mercedes Clark. Mr. Muhammad attended Roosevelt Elementary, N. Division High School, Dominican College and Gateway Technical College. He accepted Islam in 1977, when he made his pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. Mr. Muhammad was a city transit driver for the Belle Urban System in Racine for over 20 years and for Kenosha Transit. As a devoted volunteer, Mr. Muhammad served on various boards in Racine and Kenosha, including as Director of the George Bray Center in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Mr. Muhammad was the founder / owner of the Bookstore Bilal; Muhammad’s Academy of Tae Kwon Do; and OJLD Oil Fragrance. He was also influential in founding the first Islamic elementary school, Clara Muhammad Preparatory School, and was a founding father of the Juneteenth Day Celebration.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his former wife, Sharyan (Luzelle) Johnson of Birmingham, AL; children, Sharynna (George) Ramsey of Milwaukee; Mubash-Shir Muhammad II of Racine; Aipanya Muhammad of Kenosha; Damon Muhammad, Sr. of Racine; JaJuan Muhammad, Sr. of Racine; grandchildren, Omar, Jabbar, LaTiana, Damon Jr., Kyasia, Iman, Shavanna, Mya, Darvell, Key-Vonte, Jo-Nique, JaJuan Jr., Jaida, Ciara, Chris and Greg; great-grandchildren, Adriana, Ja-Leigha and Jaylen; nephew, Robert Clark; niece, Natasha Walker; special cousins, Katherine Jones and James “Mann” Brown; dearest friends, Shaheed Ghani, Syid Abdullah, Sr. and Nahbee El Amin; other dear relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Samuel Griffin; mother, Mercedes Clark; sister, Ethel Faye Griffin; nephew, James Eric Griffin; special friend, Iman Raheem Muhammad; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 9:30 am. Interment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Saturday from 8-9:30 am.
