
Nelba J. “Melvin” Polk, 77, went Home to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. He was born in Grenada, MS on February 19, 1932 the son of the late Hall and Mary (nee; Drake) Polk Sr. Mr. Polk served his country with U.S. Army. On June 24, 1963, in Chicago, IL, he was united in marriage to the former Carolyn Thompson. He had been employed by the J. I. Case Co. for over 22 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and cheering all the Chicago sports team, but, his great passion was bowling. Surviving are his wife Carolyn, four sons, James C. (Mary) Polk of Victorville, CA, Derrick E. (April) Polk, Brian K. (Kimberly) Polk, and Reginald A. (Molly) Polk all of Racine; 9 grandchildren, Tyrell Cox, of San Bernadino, CA, Siobhan A. Polk, Demetrius H. Polk, Devon M. Polk, Madisen Z. Polk, Jordon R. Polk, Brooklynne S. Polk, Hailey E. Polk, and Trey M. Polk, all of Racine; 4 step-grandchildren, Trevise Frazier of Victorville, CA, Toneidra Lloyd of Gary, IN, Norman Jamerson and Timothy Jamerson both of Victorville, CA, and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Flora Polk of Louisville, KY, Albert (Sharon) Thompson of Chicago, IL, Richard Thompson, of Tyler, TX, Alfred (Hermania) Thompson, of Palestine, TX, Jesse (Shannon) Thompson, of Arlington, TX, Sue Houston, of Dallas, TX, Clara Thompson and Debra (Fred) Marshall, all of Tyler, TX. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 3 brothers, John Polk, Hall Polk Jr., and Alonzia Polk, 3 sisters, Katherine Kimbrough, Matha Ford, and Vera Helen Johnson, and brother-in-law Fred Thompson. His Homegoing Service will be held at 11:00 on Monday, December 21st. in St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 1123 Center St., with Bishop L.L. Kirby officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Southern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Sunday, December 20th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. when a prayer service will be held and in the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
