O’Felia Mendez Carbajal, 65, passed away at WFH All Saints Hospital on Saturday, August 7, 2010. She was born in Cotulla, Texas on February 5, 1945, daughter of the late Enemencio and Isabel (nee: Garcia) Mendez-Perez. She moved to Wisconsin as a child, and resided in Racine all her life.
O’Felia retired from the Racine Unified School District, where she worked as a school social worker for 19 years. Her deep love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was evident in everything she did as a wife and mother, community activist, foster mother, mentor to many of the children in our city, as well as being a professional florist and seamstress. More than anything, O’Felia loved to be with her family, and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her 4th great-grandchild.
She is survived by her husband, Pedro “Pete” Carbajal; her children, Maria Theresa Carbajal, Cynthia (John) Cooper, Jeffery (Heidi) Castaneda, Sandra (David) Marweg, Pete (Misty) Carbajal, and Michael (Maricela) Castaneda; 18 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 7 brothers, Sam (Rosa) Mendez, Demencio (Ellen) Mendez, Roy Mendez, John A. (Trudy) Mendez, John J. (Barb) Mendez, Jerry (Elia) Mendez, and Rick Mendez; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Michael Carbajal; and sister, Esperanza Mendez.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Racine Assembly of God, with Pastor William Walmsley officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m., and in church on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. Memorials to the American Cancer Society, or Racine Assembly of God missionary ministries have been suggested.
Our family extends heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Michael Mullane and staff; Wheaton Franciscan Hospice; and everyone at All Saints Hospital 3 Med Unit for their compassionate care for O’Felia, and support of our family.
